For some reason my computer decided I didn't need the URL for the southewest server we run on and I can't remember what website had it posted (too many sites with servers to keep look around on )...can you send it to me please? I'll save it off the net this time.
Sean, Hoping all is well. was on SRS 5/23/18, moving some power to service area, it took longer than I wanted but was fun! I Saw your chat that you were working a local switch job to finish. Appreciate all the help that you have given me,(being a beginner), with your help i'm getting more comfortable with the 'whole' run8 / stream process! Note: Keep your YouTube Streams going, I've learned a lot from them! Keep your 'Spirits' up!
I've been out of the run 8 loop for a while and haven't been on the RTS servers in quite some time. I was wondering if you could tell me what I have to do to get back into the swing of things as far as new ops changes and server info goes. Thanks a bunch.
That or I can stomach it again :) No I don't mind running as a client and likely will start doing that Tue and Thu nights if not other times. To do the kind of thing I really want to do takes lots of people and I've never been able to get a big number unfortunately.
If your looking for the former RTS servers, you'll find them as the SW and SE servers. I wish SW was posted because I always forget it, and it should be advertised (try google). SE server is on run8servers.com
I was actually on tonight and did a live stream. Very enjoyable and reminded me of the old days of the RTS CA server. I will likely be running here moving foward. While still focusing on the RTS project outside of the Run8 bubble as well.
Perhaps Quincy knows me more than I know myself at times. The last 2 nights I've been running both in a session and on a paused clock at Southwest. BTW if I haven't done so already, I highly recommend the server.
As for that bug mentioned above, my situation changed very quickly and filled in the void. That is the sudden interest in my son to do lots of MP games with me (non Run8) on Sunday and Monday. For some reason Wednesday was left open. He is usually in bed by 9pm so I'll have a talk with him and see what his schedule is going to be like moving forward. I already told him to bring his computer over this weekend so we can get more stuff on it besides 3D Pool :)
But here is where the though process is taking me. I'm enjoying SRS even more as simply a client and not an admin like I was during the RTS days and even shortly after the split. That process did get me thinking more on some of the challenges I have had.
I don't want to create another CA server period! SRS already does a great job, and despite what enjoyment I did have from Mojave I know in my mind I can do so much more. Any new user to Run8 or returning user should feel right at home and welcomed to try out SRS as they are a really cool bunch of guys.
For me if I was to ever host again it would have to be something other than CA. Now the NE despite it's beauty can quickly suffer from the boredom of double track mainline runs. I also find that like the CA humps, it suffers from both the limited hump as well as the goofy way in which Run8 does things. So for me NE ran it's course.
So where was I before my disinterest in Run8 came into play? Before I went back to Mojave and before my pause from Run8 this past winter I was in Florida. Now we also already have a SE server that is in fact derived directly from the RTS server and just like SRS moved to another forum and platform. Still have respect for everyone there and no hard feelings, but we couldn't come to terms as our visions were just too far appart. SE generally runs as a tight nit bunch of guys who like switching. But when it comes to having any organized DS sessions that would get my interest to run or DS it's hard to find them. Focusing just on switcing or simply running trains without the traffic is what keeps me away personally.
So what have I learned from my last 2 nights SRS, it's that the stop clock model works very well as it did when V2 first came out. Looking back at my thoughts on Waycross the fear there was getting stuck just humping and dispatching. Looking back at Sanford it was difficult to dispatch and run trains. But there are some very good things about Florida as it stands right now.
1) The hump is prototypical and it's fixed
2) The hump can be run at any time and see little to no additional traffic unless you zoom out down to Waycross
3) Dispatching all of Florida is feasable
4) IM operations will suffer the same issues if left in Run8 fans to set up the tags. So it either has to be avoided and left for AI, or at some point manually done.
So anyways I'm certainly thinking about putting a full blown SE server up. I can't do 24/7 but I might be able to do something with extended switching coverage.
I still don't want to get burned out as well. Also the RTS software project has not died. As usual learning takes time, so I would rather take my time and get things done right. Run8 is very addictive and this can be distracting. But never say never at what the future holds.
i have know you for a little over 8 years plus the 6 years i spent on V1 with you up to now so yeah in that time frame you can learn alot about someone in all fairness i watched both streams you did from SRS server and i heard that old familar excitment in your voice again while you were talking in a way i was kinda laughin to myself sayin well that did'nt take long
Well the excitement is back, but I don't want to push it. I also want to be sure of my limits this time around and not rush into anything. CA is easy to participate in simply because I'm a client there is no pressure on me to do anything. If I don't feel like it, I simply don't do it.
When your a host you need to plan for plenty of things. It goes beyond just advertising, but also has to do with the base who follows. I've brought people along for some of the rides already and to be honest my failures can and should be a let down to those that operate. Not the haters who want to see me fail from their YouTube screen.
I'm happy to see for the most part the guys checking out the SW server and giving them a chance. From a client perspective things are not that much different. You see a train you want on the mains you can simply take it over. Other jobs for those that want locals can be found on the registry.
As I've said tonight if and when I host a SE server again it won't be until the fall. That is still a long ways away. Those failures are fine, as long as I have learned from them. Avoiding Run8's weaknessess and pushing it's many positives should keep things relatively stable. But I want to be sure.
The cool thing is there has been plenty of issues fixed between all the failed attempts at rehashing RTS. What will be different now about the SE primarily is Waycross as that bug has been fixed. That and being open to run more paused clock switching I'll have to wait and see. The big thing I'm thinking is will I run out of non CTC work in CA between sessions? What I mean by that is if I don't and I like the sounds of the job CA may very well be enough for me. So this is why I'm proceeding very cautiously.
IMO i think you should take it back to Florida you put in some work there and im quite sure it's easy enough to pick up where you left off just maybe it's stime to move away from the whole Ca and really find out what Florida has to offer most of us don't really care about double track mainlines being boring if that was the case i would have quit working for the railroad long ago now it does'nt even bother me it's point the train and go and Maybe if Ca does come back into play maybe give Cajon a go it does'nt seem like it would be hard to manage it from your standpoint
As a client I'm not leaving CA. It's much more than just operating the trains for me, it always has been. What I would be doing in Florida I can pick up, however, it's including the entire system. I only have limited time to run sessions now anyways such as Wednesday nights, but I'm not burning myself out.
Single track railroading is great for meets, but they get boring after a while too. What really drives it for me is other activity such as industries, yards, etc. LA has plenty of that, and despite having the opportunity to run single track runs on the CA so far I haven't.
The Sanford Sub in reality is not that busy thus it wouldn't be something I would run very often. The busy section is between Callahan north. Which is double track to Folkston. Once you get past Folkston it spreads out a bit thus the reason for the single track.
If I can't find enough things in CA to keep me busy that is when I'll start looking into Florida again and seeing what I can make of it. But I'm not rushing into it for anyone.
Sean, that sounds good also, I understand your view on CA. Also for me Wed. nite is better for me than Tues.(CA) for session running, With that said Waycross sounds good to me! So looking forward to when you are up and running.
It's possible that Florida might come quicker than I expected. When I started up in CA I didn't know what to expect, but I was quite pleased and still am. However, at the current rate work has a tendency of dying out between sessions after a day or so.
This is actually likely to give me more opportunity to get Florida where I want it. I'm still going with the model of a Florida Wednesday night session, then opening things up on an adhoc basis. Fall is the long range goal of starting up the server, but I'm already starting to test things out again.
All ot the southeast will be run. If you only have the Florida section you would have take over SB's coming in from Waycross, or crew change NB's heading toward it. The plan isn't to have this publically available unitl the fall. So you'll likely get to see plenty of YouTube videos as I'm running before then.
Keep in mind most trains end and start in Jacksonville with only the passengers and a few other oddballs coal trains etc. passing through. The Majority of trains start and end on the Callahan Sub.
Well from what it seems i have plenty of time to acquire Waycross but i do have Selkirk and the A line and since it will be fall before you start up no need to be in a big rush to get Waycross ahh hell what about Mohawk as well am i gonna need it as well
Mohawk is in the NE along with Selkirk. I'm looking at running Florida & Waycross. As much as I admire Mikey's work, I doubt I'll be revisiting a server in the northeast any time soon. Some of the short lines for me need more depth, as does the hump. Not to mention some of the limitations currently in Run8 will hamper what is done in the protoype as far as blocking goes.
Though the issues are still present in southeast, they aren't as obvious. The only trains that I know of that are oddballs are the IM mixed with Tropicana for example which I can't do through the AI spawn system.
Waycross blocking should be much more friendly to setoffs on Sanford Sub for example, though I have some playing to do to get the right feel.
Sean, just wondering if you make a 'SRS' Registry entry mistake how to correct it, without messing up previous 'entries' Thanks! NOTE: Had fun on 'SRS' Tuesday session, got on server for last hour and 15mins. Will check out your youtube stream later today. Tim:)
Probably best to ask over there but it does give you the option to edit your entry after you submit. The issue is once you've closed the registry window you can no longer edit it. I'd ask on their forum, or let them know what the error is and they can fix it.
I think i have a very good understanding why issues are starting to show up in Run 8 and in time they are gonna get much worse..as i told you XNA is an old old engine it was used to develop xbox 360 games the overhead room wihtin the engine itself is very very limited you can only do so much within it and then shit starts to fail..as i mnetioned the issues are gonna get worse as XNA is being pushed past it limits im quite sure the team is aware of this a few years back if i recall there was talk of moving run8 to Direct X that would alliveate alot of issues..so the issues that's starting to rear it's ugly head and it's just getting started it gonna get much worse so hold on it's gonna be a bumpy ride
How i found it out was looking through the logs run 8 sometimes gives when there are errors so i spotted it and i thought well that's weird..prolly everyone that has run8 has it installed on their pc cause i know i can't be the only one also you can get the SDK from MS DirectX is theirs
Sean, just finished watching your session stream 4/25/18 Wed. I noticed you having problem pulling your train, when you clicked on the engine, I noticed that the engines were not 'Powered' on! Check it out the startup sliders are 'red' not 'green'. NOTE:Not sure if it was all of the engine 'PWR' or just one engine. Anyways another good session hosted! see you at the next one. Tim
Hi Sean, another good session, I know you were busy in the yard, sorry I missed some of your DS responses, they faded away before had a chance to respond, I did have a question about the texture / transition from SBD to WC, in single player I could drive through the elevated textures with no problem but,in multiplayer it stopped my train quickly! I hope the run8 guys will slove this in version 3. Also what does a Holster do? is he like a conductor? Anyways had a good time see you at the next one. Tim
The server name is anything you want. You probably already had one setup when you joined me in the past it can be anything that identifies what server your on for your refrence. As for the extra board same thing. If you like being in Hobart to start for example there might be an extra board there. You can also save new extra board locations as well. But there are plenty to give you a spot where you may start from in an MP session. If your in the wrong place you can always transport and fly.
Sean, doing some upgrades to my PC , and motherboard died!! might be 2wks before I receive a replacement, so i'll have to catch up with you in about 2wks! I have a less powerful pc I can use to follow your progress on youtube. Tim :(
Hi I saw your wed.4 RTS stream, learned a lot about ED, when I join your server it says that there is a "mismatch with host/server database, then connects me anyway! Is this a normal process? Also I had to signup for wed. session (twice), then delete one, the first time did not take, so I signed in again, that might have caused conflicting info, for me when you checked the signups. Sorry! See you Sunday! Tim:)
